Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes. Deficiency is uncommon and usually appears with fat malabsorption.
The value is of interest in certain neurological conditions and in chronic fat absorption problems. The sample is taken fasting because blood fats after a meal can interfere with the assay.
