Serum iron measures how much iron is currently being transported in the blood. It varies through the day and is interpreted with transferrin and ferritin.
Iron in the blood is bound to transferrin and represents only a small fraction of the body's total iron. A single value can be misleading - ferritin is the more reliable measure of iron status.
What does low Iron mean?
Low iron can reflect iron deficiency but also appears during acute inflammation.
What does high Iron mean?
High iron can appear in haemochromatosis or after iron supplementation.
