What is included in a blood test health check?

Published 12 August 2026

The key points

  • A blood test health check normally reviews eight areas: blood count, blood sugar, blood fats, kidneys, liver, thyroid, vitamins and iron stores.
  • It shows risk factors and function values, for example long-term blood sugar and a cholesterol profile. It is not a complete disease screening.
  • Broader tiers add more precise measures such as ApoB and cystatin C, and at the highest tier hormones, cortisol and the inherited risk marker Lp(a).
  • No referral is needed, and the sample is taken at a sampling location when it suits you.
  • If you have symptoms right now, your doctor is the right route, a health check never replaces medical care.

What is a blood test health check?

A blood test health check is a broad review of the body's major systems, taken in a single draw. The point is to see where values that are otherwise invisible in daily life actually sit: blood sugar, blood fats, liver and kidney values, thyroid, vitamins and iron stores.

The other point is time. A single report shows where you stand today; repeated checks build your own reference line, so the next report can be compared with your earlier ones rather than only with the population's. Small changes then become easier to catch early.

Which areas are included?

A broad health check normally covers eight areas. Here is how they fit together:

| Area | Example values | What it shows | | --- | --- | --- | | Blood count | Haemoglobin and more | Anaemia and the balance of blood cells | | Blood sugar | Glucose, HbA1c (long-term blood sugar) | How sugar has sat over recent months | | Blood fats | Cholesterol profile with HDL, LDL and triglycerides | Risk factors for heart and vessels | | Kidneys | Creatinine | The kidneys' filtering capacity | | Liver | ALAT, ASAT | Signs of liver strain | | Thyroid | TSH (the thyroid's control signal) | The pace of your metabolism | | Vitamins | Vitamin D, B12, folate | Deficiencies that can cause tiredness | | Iron stores | Ferritin (a measure of iron reserves) | Iron deficiency before the blood count falls |

On top of this, an inflammation value is often included, hs-CRP (low-grade inflammation), which captures quiet inflammation in the body.

What can a health check show, and what can it not show?

What a health check does well is make risk factors and creeping changes visible: a long-term blood sugar heading the wrong way, blood fats that deserve attention, a vitamin deficiency, iron stores running out, or liver values that stand out. These are things you can act on early, often with simple means.

What it does not do is declare you healthy. A health check is not a complete disease screening: it takes no images, it examines no organs physically, and it is not designed to find cancer. Normal values are good news about exactly those values, nothing more and nothing less. The honest description is that a health check gives you a broad, measurable picture of how the body's systems are working, and that it complements medical care rather than replaces it.

What separates the Base, Plus and Complete tiers?

At Enkel Health the health check comes in three general tiers of increasing depth: Base goes a long way as a yearly habit. Plus earns its place when you want the more precise measures, and Complete when you also want the hormone picture or have never measured Lp(a). No tier is a wrong place to start.

How does a blood test health check work?

No referral is needed. You order the tier that suits you, walk in to a sampling location when it suits you and give the sample, an ordinary blood draw from the arm that takes a few minutes. Some values, such as blood sugar and blood fats, are affected by meals; clear fasting instructions come with the test.

The results arrive digitally, value by value, with plain-language explanations of what each number means and how it relates to the reference interval. If you repeat the check later, the new values are compared with your earlier ones.

How often is it reasonable to do a health check?

There is no fixed rule that fits everyone. Many of the values change slowly, in step with habits, weight and years, which is why many people make the check a yearly habit, much like the dentist visit. That gives comparable data points without turning into a project.

The comparability matters more than the exact frequency: the same broad review, repeated, so a change shows against your own history. If a doctor has given you a follow-up schedule for a specific value, that of course takes precedence.

Health Check Base reviews eight areas in a single blood draw, no referral needed.

When is a health check not enough?

A health check is for people who feel well and want to stay informed. If you have symptoms right now, such as chest pain, unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool or a lump that worries you, seek care directly instead of waiting for a report. In an emergency call 112, and when unsure, 1177 can advise where to turn.

The same applies if a health check report shows clearly abnormal values: the next step is then a doctor who can put the numbers in context and investigate further.
